This week’s ChangeMaker is Demetria Simpson. Demetria has over 20 years of housing and development experience. Now she’s the Vice President of Development at BGC Advantage. Demetria talks to Katie about how she found herself working in the world of affordable housing and how she handled the recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
About Demetria Simpson:
Simpson brings over 23 years of housing and development experience to the Development team. Most recently, Simpson served as CEO for the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority (LMHA). As Vice President of Development, she oversees all aspects of project development, including due diligence, land closings, permitting, grant writing, RFP submissions, and construction administration.
Her expertise spans RAD, low-income housing tax credits and other affordable housing programs and initiatives, such as the Federal Home Loan Banks program and Community Development Block Grant program.
Prior to her 5-year tenure with LMHA, Simpson served as Executive Director at R3SM, where she lead the affordable housing redevelopment efforts on the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina. In other previous roles, she was president of South MS Housing and Development Corp. and director of housing and community development with Hagerty Consulting.
